The beginning of each new semester is a very exciting and hopeful time.  As I’ve walked the campus these last two weeks, it is obvious what our students mean to the university.  You give the university a certain rhythm and an energy that is palpable.  In short, you give the campus “life.”

Dear Faculty and Staff,

You may have seen the posters and received previous messages, but I’m emailing you today to remind you to Wear Red tomorrow, September 3.

National College Colors Day is Friday, September 3.  Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to celebrate our university and the positive impact its had on the community by wearing red.   Wear Red Day, our fifth annual, is held in conjunction with National College Colors Day.  I encourage you to join me this Friday and every Friday to show your support and passion for our university by Wearing Red.

Vice President for Research

I want to share some good news with you prior to a public announcement. I’m very pleased to report to you that the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has named Dr. Robert Twilley as its Vice President for Research, pending approval by the University of Louisiana System.

Many members of our university community already know Dr. Twilley. He served as a professor in the Department of Biology from August 1995 to July 2004. And, he was director and founder of UL Lafayette’s Center for Ecology and Environmental Technology from July 1999 to May 2004.

May 11, 2010 — Important Announcement

Dear Faculty & Staff,

I am writing today to announce the retirement of our provost, Dr. Steve Landry, effective December 2010.

Dr. Landry has had a stellar career at the university that spans over 35 years.  He has served as a faculty member, department head, vice president for Research, and vice president for Academic Affairs. He will always have a place in the university’s history as its first provost.

There has been much discussion since my previous message announcing that the university had created an Office of Distance Learning, hired a director, Dr. Luke Dowden, and established a Distance Learning Leadership Council.  The Leadership Council is made up of faculty, staff, and administrators representing multiple disciplines and service units.

Dear Students,

Finals are well underway and I trust you’re quite busy with your studies.  It is likely that you are counting the days, hours, and minutes until the start of your well-deserved semester break.  For many, your return will be in the fall.  Before you go, I’d like to take a moment to thank you for helping to make this an outstanding year at UL.
