Vice President for Research

Dr. Joseph Savoie -- Thu, 07/08/2010 - 4:15pm

I want to share some good news with you prior to a public announcement. I’m very pleased to report to you that the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has named Dr. Robert Twilley as its Vice President for Research, pending approval by the University of Louisiana System.

Many members of our university community already know Dr. Twilley. He served as a professor in the Department of Biology from August 1995 to July 2004. And, he was director and founder of UL Lafayette’s Center for Ecology and Environmental Technology from July 1999 to May 2004.

He joined the UL Lafayette faculty in January 1986 as an assistant professor in the Department of Biology. He became an associate professor in August 1988. He earned the UL Foundation’s Distinguished Professor Award in 2000.

Dr. Twilley’s area of expertise is wetland ecology and rehabilitating damaged wetlands. He has also studied climate change extensively and its effect on states along the Gulf of Mexico.

Dr. Twilley has served as associate vice chancellor for LSU’s Office of Research and Economic Development since November 2006. He has been director of  LSU’s Wetland Biogeochemistry Institute, as well as director of the Shell Coastal Environmental Modeling Laboratory in LSU’s School of the Coast and Environment.

He is a respected scholar and scientist who also has extensive administrative experience. I’m confident that Dr. Twilley will be a strong leader who will help UL Lafayette continue its development as one of the Top 100 public research universities in the nation.

His first day as Vice President for Research will be Aug. 15.

Sincerely,

E. Joseph Savoie
