Third Special Session and Anti-Hazing Laws

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Whether you’re enjoying some time off or working, I hope your summer season, which officially begins this week, is a great one. 

Yesterday, the state legislature entered into a third special session. I remain hopeful that government leaders will continue providing stability for higher education funding and fulfilling the promise of TOPS. Both investments pay high dividends for state and regional economies. It is vital that our elected officials hear from their constituents about the need to support revenue measures sufficient to address these important issues.

Significant changes enacted from this spring’s regular session included four laws to discourage hazing and strengthen sanctions. Several university presidents and I attended the May 31 signing ceremony of the Max Gruver Act, along with Max’s parents.

Our university and others across the state offered support to Louisiana legislators in crafting the anti-hazing bills that became laws. Also, this week staff members from Student Affairs, Student Engagement and Leadership, Student Rights and Responsibilities, and Public Safety are attending sessions led by national experts on reviewing and further developing health and safety initiatives for hazing prevention strategies and identifying high-risk behaviors.

Not just Student Affairs administrators and staff, but every student, faculty member, parent and alumnus are tasked to ensure that hazing in any form is eliminated. You can learn more about the new laws, review our zero-tolerance policy and find educational resources at our anti-hazing website.

Through everyone’s efforts, I am optimistic that next academic year will be our best one yet.
